I heard a whisper that trademe may be about to launch a new section specifically for new cars. Like I say, it's just a whisper. I could be completely off the mark, however, I am pretty sure this one is a go.
When you think about it, this is really a natural move for 'the place that kiwis buy and sell online'. Potentially we will have yet another New Zealand online vertical falling into the hands of Australians. What will be interesting to see is how trademe actually approach this new offering on their site, if it does eventuate.
Trademe Motors has proven itself to be the most important advertising channel for used car dealers in New Zealand over the past few years. New car sales yards and people, however, have completely unique requirements to that of the used car sales industry.
Technology for new car sales using the internet is spearheaded in the United States by the likes of autobytel. The models of these sites is more focused around selling leads to new car dealers. Trademe motors existing model is more in line with a traditional publishers 'charge for space' business model.
It will be interesting to keep an eye on trademe Motors over the coming weeks. Like I say, it's only a whisper......
