I am going to tread carefully here, as George fm are pretty much the salvation of Auckland radio stations in my opinion. I love electronic music and George play lots of it with minimal advertisement breaks. The last plug before my rant will go to Peter Urlich the host of their morning breakfast show the PUBE- this show is my morning drive entertainment.
So I may be way outa line here but.....
Is it okay for George to read directly from the NZ herald online for news stories with no credit given? I don't have a journalism degree (or any degree for that matter) but I would have assumed that if you were going to read another organizations online content for your own radio stations benifit you would at least provide a credit. The word plagiarize springs to mind.
Maybe George pay the NZ herald for the rights to read the content directly off their website? I am absolutely positive that the George News presenter is doing this as I was listening to and reading this story at the same time.
The issue of plagiarism in the context of the internet has always been a hot topic, particularly in the world of SEO. Google make it perfectly clear that they are constantly trying to eradicate duplicate content from their listings. Now, thanks to new web 2.0 technology such as RSS, it is extremely simple to the suck the content from one blog and push it out to the world on another. This happens to half-geek quite regularly.
But reading out the herald on your national radio station as 'your' news, not cool in my book. What do you guys think?
There's no need to be careful where you tread on this topic. Its well-known that George rip everything. Their news, their music sourcing, even inside commercials. George has always lacked foresight in this way, and operated organically. Perhaps thats why their top end clients like them?
